His confidence and belief that he deserves everything he’s achieved helped me get through some really tough times in my life. I used to watch his interviews over and over. His energy lifted me up and made me excited.

The more people misunderstood him, the more understandable he was to me.

I never got the dislike many Swiss people have for him. All those comments about his so-called “attitude”… Federer was their beloved – that’s understandable, he’s one of them.

But Novak?

He does things his way, listens to his body and what he feels. His fighting spirit and Serbian soul (very similar to the Polish one!) are hard to tame. Many tell him to retire, but he refuses.

And that’s exactly why I love and respect him.

If he ever stops playing, I’ll probably stop following tennis altogether. His presence and who he is raises the game. He says he owes it to tennis to still be there – and you can see he really means it.
